The film begins in Cariati, Calabria, where a group of rebels of all ages decides to protest in an unprecedented way—occupying the hospital with the goal of reopening it.
Meanwhile, some of the most prominent intellectuals, doctors, experts, and activists from Italy and around the world—including Gino Strada, Ken Loach, and Roger Waters—reveal the true local and global responsibilities behind the attack on public healthcare and support Cariati’s struggle.
Public healthcare in Italy has been severely weakened by decades of budget cuts and privatizations. The “Recovery Plan”, which overnight led to the closure of Cariati’s hospital (along with 18 others in Calabria alone), reflects an era in which the right to healthcare is increasingly under threat.
